There are so many different types of caulk that it can become mind boggling. This tutorial will provide the knowledge needed to pick the right one.
There are four basic types of caulk that can be used for various projects:
Silicone Caulk
Acrylic Latex Caulk
Butyl Rubber Caulk
Siliconized Latex Caulk
Acrylic Latex Caulk
Depending upon the project Latex Caulk is the best all around caulk as it is with the exception of high water prone areas. It comes in a variety of colors and can be used around the house for a variety of projects. The best part about latex caulk is that it can be painted in as little as 30 minutes depending upon the manufacturer. Acrylic Latex Caulk can be used indoors and outdoors. Clean up is easy with soap and water.
Butyl Rubber Caulk
This type of caulk is for specialized uses and doesn't fair well for an all around caulk like latex. The primary use for this caulk is to fill cracks in concrete and brick. It is considered to be the strongest and most durable type of caulk. It can be painted and clean up requires a specific solvent.
Silicone Caulk
Silicone Caulk is the best product for caulking in high water prone areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. It comes in a variety of colors which is ideal since it can't be painted and is flexible. Use only on non-porous surfaces as it very difficult, if not impossible, to remove from porous materials. Clean up on porous surfaces can be done using a solvent.
Siliconized Latex Caulk
This is a combination of Silicone and Latex caulk that can be painted. It is a favorite of mine due to the ability to paint it and it still has some of the silicone benefits. Please note that while it contains silicone it should not be used in high water prone areas. This product last longer than regular latex caulk and is somewhat flexible.
Applying caulk is a relatively simple and straight forward task. Choosing the right caulk shouldn't be a hassle!
